Abstracts

In my  desire to explore and grow in a new direction as a painter, I am embarking on a new series of “Abstracts”.I am finding new challenges in approaching the canvas without a preconceived idea, and/or image to “hang my paint on”, but rather to have it unfold in an organic manner.

The biggest step is the first: beginning with a wholehearted commitment to “just letting things happen” and working with the elements of chance that infuse the work.  Letting unbridled color loose on the canvas, applying slathers of texture with a palette knife, flinging gels about, all bring into focus the abandon and attention to the moment required.

The approach is quite daunting, the results often unexpected, and pleasantly surprising.  The work becomes heavily influenced by the variety of materials – the assortment of gels, pastes, and unorthodox tools that get pulled into service.  Texture, color, form, and gesture become essential ingredients in capturing the spirit within the work.  Together they form a kind of dance in which vivid color moves across a warm and richly nuanced surface.
