Cultural Intersections

These paintings can be described as “exotic” landscapes hovering somewhere between representation and abstraction. Largely painted intuitively, and drawing on an array of reference material, they are a mix of objects, nature imagery, patterning and ornamentation.  Within this eclectic mix of age-old patterns rooted in South Asian, Middle Eastern, or Western cultures, in juxtaposition with selected images, the paintings become vehicles to express my concerns for loss of nature, the echoes of colonialism, migration, reflection and transformation. Through re-interpreting and re-contextualizing these forms within my own unique style and content, this synthesis is a way of speaking to the “in-between space” of varied social and cultural realities I inhabit.
